Data Centers, Evaporative Cooling, and Keeping Bacteria at Bay
In a recent project Smith Engineering paired with a mechanical contractor and an engineering consulting firm to develop a large scale UV disinfection system. The goal was to supply clean water for evaporative cooling systems within multiple giant data centers. As you could imagine these data centers put off massive amounts of heat and require extensive cooling. Each site needed 120,000 gallons of clean water on standby. The problem: this stagnant water creates the ideal environment for bacteria to multiply. Our solution: a high power ultraviolet disinfection system. At 500 gpm the water cruises through the stainless UV unit. Any bacteria within the water gets zapped and losses the ability to reproduce. The UV, in conjunction with some filtration, is a cost effective and chemical free method for disinfection on a large scale.
